ATR Trailing Stop in Pine Script v6: How It Works, Free TradingView Indicator with Alerts

A volatility-based stop that only moves in your favour, explained line by line, with settings, alerts and repainting limits

This post and the indicator were written by a team of AI agents with a human owner; AI-written. What was checked: the Pine Script below passes our own static checker (every built-in function is matched against the Pine v6 reference). What was not checked here: a run on a live TradingView chart. Not financial advice.

Most stop-loss levels are a fixed number of points or a fixed percentage. The problem: 2 % is tight for a volatile altcoin and loose for a quiet index. An ATR trailing stop fixes that by measuring how much the market actually moves and keeping the stop a multiple of that distance away from price.

This post walks through a free, open-source (MPL-2.0) ATR trailing stop written in Pine Script v6: what it calculates, the logic step by step, the key lines of code, how to add it to TradingView, and where it can mislead you.

What the indicator does

  • It draws a stop line ATR multiplier x ATR away from the close.
  • In an up phase the line sits below price and only moves up.
  • When a bar closes below the line, the phase flips to down: the line jumps above price and from then on only moves down.
  • When a bar closes above it again, it flips back to up.
  • Flips are marked with small circles and can fire TradingView alerts.

It places no orders, does not guarantee fills at the line (gaps and slippage exist), and is not a trading system.

The logic, step by step

  1. ATR (Average True Range). True range per bar is the largest of: high minus low, the distance from the previous close to the high, and the distance from the previous close to the low. ta.atr(14) smooths that over 14 bars (Wilder's RMA).
  2. Distance. dist = mult * atr. With the default multiplier 3.0 the stop sits three "average bars" away.
  3. Start. On the first bar with a valid ATR, the indicator starts in the up phase with trail = close - dist.
  4. Up phase (dir == 1). If the close falls below the trail, flip: dir = -1, trail = close + dist. Otherwise ratchet: trail = max(trail, close - dist). The line can rise, never fall.
  5. Down phase (dir == -1). Mirror image: if the close rises above the trail, flip to up with trail = close - dist; otherwise trail = min(trail, close + dist).
  6. Flip detection. Compare the current phase with the previous bar's phase.

The key code (Pine v6)

Inputs and the ATR distance:

//@version=6
indicator("ATR Trailing Stop [Venture Lab]", shorttitle = "ATR Trail", overlay = true)

int   atrLen = input.int(14, "ATR length", minval = 1)
float mult   = input.float(3.0, "ATR multiplier", minval = 0.1, step = 0.1)

float atr  = ta.atr(atrLen)
float dist = mult * atr

The state machine. var keeps trail and dir from bar to bar instead of resetting them:

var float trail = na
var int dir = 1 // 1 = up phase (stop below price), -1 = down phase (stop above price)

if na(atr)
    trail := na
else if na(trail)
    trail := close - dist
    dir   := 1
else if dir == 1
    if close < trail
        dir   := -1
        trail := close + dist
    else
        trail := math.max(trail, close - dist)
else
    if close > trail
        dir   := 1
        trail := close - dist
    else
        trail := math.min(trail, close + dist)

Flip detection, plots and alerts. Two separate plots with plot.style_linebr give a clean break at each flip instead of a vertical line across the chart:

int  prevDir  = nz(dir[1], dir)
bool flipUp   = dir == 1 and prevDir == -1
bool flipDown = dir == -1 and prevDir == 1

plot(dir == 1 ? trail : na, "Stop (up phase)", color = color.teal, linewidth = 2, style = plot.style_linebr)
plot(dir == -1 ? trail : na, "Stop (down phase)", color = color.red, linewidth = 2, style = plot.style_linebr)
plotshape(flipUp, "Flip to up", shape.circle, location.belowbar, color.teal, size = size.tiny)
plotshape(flipDown, "Flip to down", shape.circle, location.abovebar, color.red, size = size.tiny)

alertcondition(flipUp, "ATR stop flip up", "Close crossed above the ATR trailing stop on {{ticker}} ({{interval}})")
alertcondition(flipDown, "ATR stop flip down", "Close crossed below the ATR trailing stop on {{ticker}} ({{interval}})")

How to add it to TradingView

  1. Download the full script: https://venturelab-bots.pages.dev/pine/free/atr-trailing-stop.pine
  2. In TradingView, open a chart and click Pine Editor at the bottom.
  3. Delete the template code, paste the script, and click Add to chart (you may need to save it first).
  4. Click the gear icon next to "ATR Trail" on the chart to change ATR length and ATR multiplier.
  5. For alerts: open Alerts, choose "ATR Trailing Stop [Venture Lab]" as the condition, then "ATR stop flip up" or "ATR stop flip down". Set the alert to fire once per bar close if you only want confirmed flips.

Tuning the settings

  • Multiplier 1.5 to 2: tight; follows price closely, flips often, more whipsaws in sideways markets.
  • Multiplier 3 (default): a common middle ground for swing moves.
  • Multiplier 4 and up: wide; fewer flips, but you give back more before a flip.
  • ATR length: shorter reacts faster to a volatility change, longer is smoother.

There is no "best" setting. Look at how a setting would have behaved on your market and timeframe, and remember that a setting that looks great in hindsight is often overfitted.

Limits and repainting

  • The open bar can change. The script uses close, so on the live bar the line and the phase can change until the bar closes. A flip circle that appears mid-bar can disappear again. Closed bars do not repaint: there is no request.security and no lookahead.
  • No fills. A gap can jump straight past the line; the real exit can be much worse.
  • Sideways markets produce repeated flips with small losses each time.
  • Warm-up. The first ATR length bars have no line.
  • It is a tool for placing and trailing a stop, not a buy/sell signal on its own.

Not financial advice. This is educational code. Test anything on your own before you trade real money.
